Over the past 9 years, SEGA has logged over 1,400 SEGA star tags and registration numbers to deserving former racers now living life as champion pets. Each year, we meet more wonderful and deserving hounds looking for homes. And each year, SEGA spends more than is earned to bring the newly petted pups to Atlanta. We also help find homes for courageous pups who have survived fires and broken legs and days wandering on the side of the road. We clean their teeth, update their vaccinations, and have them spayed/neutered. We fix broken tails, broken skin and broken teeth. We rarely see a hound with a broken spirit.
So, we thought it would be the perfect time to come together for the pups currently awaiting adoption in Atlanta – from Amazin’ Blazin’ and Valley Okuma to the hounds who we will find a home for in the future. SEGA retains 12 kennel runs in the adoption kennel at Lake City Animal Hospital. Even at a very generous (non-revenue earning) daily rate charged to SEGA by Dr. Carmichael and the staff at LCAH, that’s $650 PER WEEK ($2,600 PER MONTH) to keep the kennel available for hounds awaiting adoption. If we can raise $6 from each of the over 1,400 SEGA star-tagged hounds, we can collectively contribute over $8,000 to the SEGA Kennel and Operating Fund.
Just what will your hound’s $6 and our collective $8,000 mean to SEGA? Consider some of the average costs PER Greyhound (note: costs represent a GENEROUS 20% to 40% discount courtesy of Dr. Carmichael and LCAH):
| $ | 11.00 | New collar, leash and muzzle for a newly retired Greyhound | |
| 25.46 | Average cost PER MONTH for heartworm and other parasite prevention (includes fosters) | ||
| 12.80 | Average cost PER MONTH for flea & tick prevention (includes fosters) | ||
| 51.60 | Vaccinations for one Greyhound, includes tests for tick-borne illness and heartworm | ||
| 40.25 | Dental work for a newly retired Greyhound without gum disease (if done with spay/neuter) | ||
| 100.00 | Expenses incurred by SEGA/Tallahassee for a round trip ride for one hound from JCKC racetrack to LCAH-SEGA | ||
| 99.20 | Average cost per Greyhound neutered ($100.40) / spayed ($92.00) | ||
| 200.00 | Average cost PER MONTH for feeding and housing one Greyhound in the SEGA adoption kennel ($50/week) | ||
| $ | 540.31 | Grand Total PER Greyhound |
Additional expenses incurred from time to time:
Routine blood panel - $69; laceration repair - $33 to $72 without anesthesia, $68 to $136 with anesthesia; happy tail surgery - $143; one week’s worth of antibiotics for a sick hound - $25; hookworm/whipworm medication - $12 to $23; tapeworm medication - $28
As a non-profit corporation, we rely on non-profit, tax-deductible donations to feed and house retired racing greyhounds and to cover the costs of emergency veterinary care. No donation is too small. 100% goes directly to the Greyhounds. Can you help us “move the needle” and boost the operating fund so we can continue to help hounds awaiting homes now that they have completed their racing careers?
